Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar (White)

White

A formidable array of technical features specified by guitar wizard Steve Vai!

The Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar is a top-of-the-line 6-string solidbody capable of exploring the most extreme sonic territories at any speed. The 5-piece maple/walnut neck is super-smooth for easy riffing and incredibly strong and stable with a lead-friendly thin and flat profile. A 25-1/2" scale and bolt-on neck joint get you lots of bass and treble response with a quick, precise attack. A 43mm nut provides comfortable string spacing and 24 jumbo frets deliver greater range while the recessed tremolo provides right-hand playing comfort and allows notes to be radically raised as well as lowered. The alder body produces clear, full-bodied vintage tone that serves all your needs from chunky rhythms to searing leads. A trio of screaming DiMarzio Evolution pickups (humbuckers at the neck and bridge with a custom single-coil in the mid position), coupled with Split-5 wiring give you all the tonal diversity you crave. And of course, there's Vai's signature Monkey Grip on the bass-side body wing.

Alder body

Best known as the body wood for the classic single coil, bolt on neck guitar, alder produces clear, full bodied vintage tone that works well for lead or rhythm work.

Rosewood fingerboard

Rosewood offers a strong, bright sound and an attractive appearance with a long grain.

DiMarzio Evolution humbuckers

The Evolution neck and bridge humbuckers are the result of 2 years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player and his axe: Steve Vai and his Ibanez JEMs. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have a patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers. The Evolution pickups were originally designed with live gigs in mind, but they have so much presence and definition that they're great recording pickups, too; they slice right through even the densest mix.

Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar Features:

  • JEM Prestige neck
  • 5-piece maple/walnut neck
  • 25-1/2" scale
  • Alder body
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • Recessed Edge Pro bridge/tremolo
  • DiMarzio Evolution neck humbucker

Honor SRV This Week & Play Your Strat Even More!

August 27, 2008 marked 18 years since the passing of SRV.

Sean Murphy at PopMatters posted a cool piece yesterday which both honors SRV, and gives a personal perspective on Murphy's experience of that day.

It's similar to my experience and others I've heard.

This is a week to test your calluses to the limit, as Stevie Ray did nearly every night. If it gives you the Blues, just go get your guitar and work it out. Make it better, get better at playing guitar, and be thankful we can still enjoy and learn from SRV through his recordings.

Now I'm sure many of you will have seen Brian Eastwood's Dali-esque take on the classic design of the Fender Strat, the appropriately-named Bender Distortocaster, but you don't often see these come up for sale on eBay, so if you're looking for something a bit weird but which will also play beautifully, snap it up now while you can!

The Ruokangas Duke Artisan

Every now and then a guitar comes in that you have to take outside and shoot in the sunlight.

The dark cherry and subdued nature of this Ruokangas Artisan makes it so elegant. The flamed Arctic birch explodes under the tuxedo appearance in dark colors and silver.

What I usually say about the Ruokangas is that it is an excellent marriage of selected wood types and pickups.

The Mojo Grande, VSOP Supreme and the Dukes are all Spanish cedar for the body core. The Mojo Grande is a fingerpicker’s electric guitar that exploits the fully hollow body, woods and pickups.

You might go to older and more established models and call the Duke Artisan, Juha’s Gibson 335 but that would be rather and maybe completely misleading. This is a Ruokangas therefore it is an original creation from cellulose to copper. Juha Ruokangas is primarily an artist when it comes to the guitar. He hears and sees in his own way.

The sound of this guitar is, like all Ruokangas guitars, superlative. The semi-like-a-335-hollow and the one “F” hole nature of the set neck body design makes for a powerful and clear sound. The Dukebucker is a pickup thought out for tone and I’d venture to say one of the most distinctive sounding pickups out there.

As I hammer home again that this guitar is a marriage of wood, pickup and design, the Dukebuckers sounded great on a VSOP Special, a bolt-on-neck Fender type design in alder. The pickup is all about tone.

The body core of the Artisan is Spanish cedar. Spanish cedar is a neck wood for flamenco guitars. Spanish cedar is not preferred for classical guitar tops but like other cedars, Spanish is a lighter and a more sonically active wood than mahogany.

With this in mind the obvious thing to do is to detail the pickup for the wood and consider that vintage guitars have developed a relationship of pickup and wood, as the wood has dried and the pickups were from a period when clarity mattered more than distortion.

The Artisan, as all Ruokangas guitars, might be considered to have a vintage sound. Spanish cedar is a dry sounding and light wood. What happens to an old guitar body is it generally dries out. Just a thought…

Flamed Arctic birch has the flamed maple characteristics; it is a bright and tortured wood from cold climes. At this time I cannot separate the sound out as being any different than flamed maple. This is something that Juha reinforced when I asked him about this as he makes the same Dukes in different kinds of maple. It would seem they are sonically the same.

The Artisan weighs little when you compare it to a guitar made with mahogany and maple like a Gibson Les Paul.

To explain the Ruokangas sound is to use the word “vintage.” I describe a cedar/Indian rosewood classical guitar as milk chocolate the same way that Ricardo Cobo describes it. Words fail to describe sounds but milk chocolate is more “mellow” than semi-sweet.

In the final analysis you can give a few words to describe this Artisan. It has tremendous tone and in this tone you can hear the wood and the pickups interact. It has a slight acoustic quality that the semi-hollow has which adds to the dynamics you can use with a pick or fingers.

The distortion sound with the Artisan, in a Naylor Dual 60 amp with 2-12 Naylor speakers is very Rock & Roll which to me means a sound that has more clarity in the distortion with distinction of individual notes in a chord while still breaking up to the level of ZZ Top.

The Artisan in clean channel is sweet on the front pickup and trumpet-like on the rear. The pickups are tapped and in single coil mode it honks a little more than the solid and chambered Duke. This makes it a slightly more versatile guitar if you want a two in one Ruokangas.

This guitar is presently being offered on eBay.

When I saw the photo for the first time, of course I didn’t read the title, I though it was an strange new Les Paul guitar but then I realized that there wasn’t a perspective problem, the guitar was very small. The Gibson Signature Series Les Paul Standard Flash Drive is a perfect gift for all the Les Paul fans that could carry their own recording files in a small replica of their favorite guitar.
The Gibson Signature Series Les Paul Standard Flash Drive is a 1959 Les Paul Standard (with honey burst finish, I think) replica that features 1 GB storage capacity, USB 2.0 port, status LED, 14Mbps read and 6Mbps write speeds and USB extension cable (they could have make it like a instrument cable with jack termination). The device, to make it more freak, comes with a Gibson USA hardshell case replica to protect the flash drive.
If you have near you a Les Paul fanatic, you know what you can give him for his birthday. The Gibson Signature Series Les Paul Standard Flash Drive is now available and its price is $89.99.

Signature products are sometimes used only to keep the attention on the brand, but other times the product is really good and the high price is worth it. Dunlop SW-95 Slash Signature Crybaby Wah Pedal is the new one from Jim Dunlop.
Slash’s sound was one the most recognizable hard rock sounds and Gibson and Marshall have released the Les Paul’s Slash signature guitar and Marshall’s Slash signature amp. Now, Jim Dunlop releases the SW-95 Slash Signature Crybaby Wah Pedal.
Features high gain distortion with the heralded Fasel Inductor, LEDs indicating the on/off status of wah and distortion and accessible battery from the top.
Suggested price for the SW-95 Slash Signature Crybaby Wah Pedal is $289.98.

PICKUPS by EPIPHONE

The Lab of the Dr. Epiphone is where the Gibson low-cost company develops some of their new products and this week they have announced a new active pickup, with the obvious name of Epiphone EpiActive Pickup. This pickup is the result of a long development by Epiphone engineers.
The Epiphone EpiActive Pickups features a built-in active preamp circuit, low noise, low distortion op amps, high output dynamic signal and shielded housing to provide noise immunity. The result is an active pickup that boosts the output signal and will be perfect for highly distortioned tones.
We don’t know what products will include this new Epiphone EpiActive Pickups or if Epiphone will sell this pickup as a stand-alone product which price will it have, but I’m sure we will have some updates soon.

Gibson Slash Signature Series

After appearing on the Guitar Hero III videogame and releasing its own custom signature guitars on Gibson and Epiphone, Slash and Gibson will team up again to release a whole Slash guitar line. This Gibson Slash Signature Series will feature 8 different models, from “cheaper” to custom highest-quality Slash-signed models, supposedly all Gibson models, not Epiphone.

The are not many details by now but it looks like Gibson will retire the existing Slash signature models to make customers pay more attention to the models from this new serie. Another point is, although all the people are thinking about Les Paul models… could there be a surprise with a non-Les Paul model? If there is a non-Les Paul model I think it will be a ES-335 model, but we’ll know all the details on March 15th when the Gibson Slash Signature Series will be released.

UPDATE (01.16.2008): Rumors says that Slash Signature models will be at Winter NAMM and we obtained, in the Les Paul Forum, an image of what could be the 1st Slash signature model.

If you don’t want to spend the $4,000 that costs the Slash Gibson signature but you are a big fan of Velvet Revolver’s guitar player and want to own one of its signature guitars this is good news for you, Epiphone will release the Slash Les Paul Standard Plus-Top Guitar a small and cheaper version of the Gibson signature.
The Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Plus-Top features mahogany body with flamed maple top, mahogany neck, Slash neck profile, rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, 24.75″ scale length, LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, 2 Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro (neck and bridge version) humbucker pcikups, 3-way pickup switch and 2 volume and 2 tone controls.
This guitar is available in a great tobacco sunburst finish but the top hat is not included. The price of the Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Plus-Top has not been announced yet but it will be available on December 14th.
UPDATE (12.06.2007): The Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Plus-Top is now available for preorder and its price is $699, similar to other Epiphone signature guitars.

Ibanez Debuts 3rd Handcrafted Reissue: The Artist AR5000RE November 30, 2007

For the third Summer NAMM musical instrument convention in a row, Ibanez debuted a handcrafted recreation of one of the ornate vintage Ibanez guitars that are now highly sought collector's items. This year the must-have-and-hide-the-receipt-from-the-spouse instrument was the Ibanez Artist AR5000RE, a stunning combination of hi-tech (well, hi-tech for the '80s) electronics and Japanese Old World craftsmanship
Like the original, AR5000RE reissue features a mahogany body with a flamed maple top, a stunning vine neck inlay and more than enough knobs and switches to satisfy the most obsessive tone control freak: nine if you include the coil tap switches, pre-amp controls, etc.— ten if you include the standard pickup selector switch. Now starting to ship, the AR5000RE has a list of $5999.99

ARC100

Ibanez continues to emulate the classic guitar companies today, although the instruments are designed with enough diffferences to avoid lawsuits. The ARC100 Artist is one of those such quality copy cat Ibanez guitars.
Like the Gibson Les Paul, the Artist has a Mahogany body, Rosewood fingerboard , and a set neck. The guitar’s shape looks vaguely familiar to the Les Paul with a single cutaway. Ibanez does have another guitar that looks even more like the Les Paul in its body shape, this is the ART100. Again that one has a set in neck and mahogony body like the ARC. The ARC Artist also has double humbuckers, fixed bridge, and simliar hardware to the old Gibson Les Paul. However this guitar has only one master volume knob where the Paul has one per pickup. Also you may decide to replace the nut with one of better quality.
Ibanez guitars are universally of high quality and this axe is no exception. Soundwise it’s very reminiscent of a Les Paul. It has a full sound and the neck position pickup can provide some sweet tone. It comes fairly well set up from the factory so you should be ready to rock right away. One difference from the Paul is that Ibanez has included fine tuners in the bridge. That’s killer if you ask me!
Shockingly, this durably, high quality, toneful Ibanez guitar is only about 300 bucks at guitar shops online. Now certainly, you must play one before you even consider buying a guitar, so head down to your local guitar store and try it out. If you’re too short on cash for a real Gibson Les Paul, the ARC100 Ibanez guitar may be the axe for you.
